April 28, 2004: Thomas Bolioli of Terra Novum has been selected by the (IEEE) to present a paper at it's conference, International Symposium on Electronics and Environment, held in Scottsdale, AZ on May 11th. The IEEE is the preeminent eletrical engineering organization and standards body in the world and is reponsible for standards from basic networking protocols to the data transfer protocol commonly referred to as Firewire. The paper, entitled "Power Management of Computers", details the experiences of enabling power management on PCs in both enterprise and residential/small business environments. The paper goes through what has worked and what is not working with regards to power management on PCs and monitors in the Windows operating system. The conclusions of the paper are that, although Microsoft has inreased the stability of it's power management to acceptable levels, the overall design of power management in Windows is sorely lacking. The resulting implementation has hindered adoption of power management and more importantly has negated the work the ACPI working group in providing the hardware tools to allow for rich and robust PC power management.
