Chairman of the White House Council
on Environmental Quality (CEQ) on June
1st, 2005.
The topic will be an update on Environmental Policies and Initiatives by
the Bush Administration.
James L. Connaughton was appointed by President Bush on June 18, 2001 to serve as the Chairman of the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ). In this capacity, he serves as the senior environmental and natural resources advisor to the President as well as Director of the White House Office of Environmental Policy, which oversees the development of environmental policy, coordinates interagency implementation of environmental programs, and mediates key policy disagreements among Federal agencies, state, tribal and local governments and private citizens.
The Council on Environmental Quality coordinates federal environmental efforts and works closely with agencies and other White House offices in the development of environmental policies and initiatives. The Council's Chair, James L. Connaughton who was appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate, serves as the principal environmental policy adviser to the President. In addition, CEQ reports annually to the President on the state of the environment; oversees federal agency implementation of the environmental impact assessment process; and acts as a referee when agencies disagree over the adequacy of such assessments.
