EZ GPO Tool
For
the U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR program, Terra Novum developed the EZ GPO tool
to centrally manage power management settings on Windows client workstations
using Group Policy Objects under Active Directory using Group Policy as
well as using eDirectory/NDS using Zenworks. (Please download below.) The
tool is released under a BSD style open source license and has no per seat
licensing charge. If you have any technical questions about the EZ GPO
tool, please contact EPA and their technical contractors at: powermanagement@cadmusgroup.com.
Also, please see the EPA ENERGY STAR power management web site at www.energystar.gov/powermanagement for more information about other network software tools, case studies,
energy savings estimates, and other information on power management.
Stable Release Version
- Version 2.1.07
release (Release Note: There have been changes rolled out
in recent weeks to XP that caused issues with the GPO Tool for power
management. There is no need to disable the tool, only that it will
cease to make changes as directed. The problem exists when using the
security override option. We will be updating the tool with a fix but
in the interim, you can provide
permissions for "Query
Value", "Set Value", "Create Subkey" and "Enumerate
Subkeys" to the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Controls
Folder\PowerCfg" reg key to all users.
Below are detailed instructions
for this.
*** Using SetACL.exe ****
Download the command line version of SetACL from http://setacl.sourceforge.net/
Use the following command line to grant permissions.
SetACL.exe -on "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Controls
Folder\PowerCfg" -ot reg -actn ace -ace "n:users;p:full"
Use the following command line to remove any explicitly added permissions and
revert to using inheritance.
SetACL.exe -on "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Controls
Folder\PowerCfg" -ot reg -actn clear -clr "dacl"
